An Indiana man pleaded guilty Friday to murder and burglary in the strangling death of a 75-year-old Evansville real estate agent whose body was found inside her basement last year.

Jamerus P. Parkman, 35, entered the plea Oct. 23 in the killing of Susan Haynie.

Officers first arrived at Haynie’s home in the 3300 block of East Gum Street around 5 p.m. on Aug. 27 after receiving a call about a medical emergency. First responders found Haynie unresponsive and determined she was beyond life-saving efforts. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Evansville Police Department’s Adult Investigation Unit initially handled the case as a death investigation. During the early response, the department stated that “as the investigation is still in its early stages, limited information is available at this time,” while asking anyone with details to reach out to investigators.

Detectives soon shifted the case to a homicide investigation and identified Parkman as a person of interest. He was initially taken into custody on unrelated charges. According to investigators, Parkman had been released from prison six months prior to the incident.

Police later submitted a probable cause affidavit charging Parkman with murder and burglary after preliminary forensic testing on physical evidence connected him to the scene and the killing.
