“I wasn't horrified, I was frightened, because I had never ever seen Joe like that before or since. Never,” Jill, 74, said of her husband’s debate performance in an interview withCBS News Sunday Morningset to air Sunday, May 31.

Joe, 83,muddled his way throughthe June 28, 2024 debate in Atlanta, stumbling over his words and losing his train of thought more than once as Trump hammered the then-president on immigration and the economy. His campaign said he had been suffering from a cold that night, with Joe latertellingABC News’ George Stephanopoulos that he “was feeling terrible” while on stage.

“I don't know what happened. As I watched it, I thought, ‘Oh, my God, he’s having a stroke,’ ” Jill continued. “And it scared me to death.”

Joe’s performance raised significant concerns among Democrats about his age and ability to serve another four years, ultimately leading him to drop out of the race and endorse his vice president,Kamala Harris.

The former first lady’sforthcoming memoir,View From the East Wing, haspromisedto bring readers “behind the scenes” of her life at the White House, including “witnessing the abrupt end of her husband’s bid for reelection.”

Key Points

  • "I don't know what happened. I mean, when I, as I watched it, I thought, 'Oh, my God, he's having a stroke,'" Jill recently reflected.

  • The former president attracted widespread attention for his erratic, slurred, and often incoherent delivery during the bout against current president Donald Trump.

Jill Bidenmay have defended her husbandJoe Biden's performance during an infamous 2024 presidential debate in the aftermath. But privately, she was terrified.

"I don't know what happened. I mean, as I watched it, I thought, 'Oh, my God, he's having a stroke.' And it scared me to death," the former first lady shared in anadvance clipfrom a forthcoming interview withCBS Sunday Morning.

"I was frightened, because I had never ever seen Joe like that before or since. Never," she reflected.

Joe Biden andDonald Trumpfaced off in the first presidential debate of the 2024 race on June 27. Many already held concerns about Biden's perceived cognitive ability based not only on his age (81 at the time), but because of prior speeches and public appearances in which he spoke in arambling, incoherent way.

There were concerns aboutTrump's cognitive fitnessat age 77 as well, but Biden's performance at the Techwood Turner Campus in Atlanta stunned even those who were rooting hard for the incumbent candidate.

He appeared to lose focus in the middle of answering questions, he committed uncomfortable gaffes, as when he said we need to "finally beat MediCare" during an answer about healthcare, and he accused Trump of "molesting a woman in public" during one heated exchange.

The backlash to Biden's debate performance was swift and overwhelmingly critical. The bipartisan panel ofThe Viewjoined together to issue an urgentcall for him to resignfrom the race the morning after. "Donald Trump was a mess. He lied his way through it, but Joe Biden's performance was so bad that it eclipsed everything that Donald Trump said," noted Republican cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin, while the more liberal Sunny Hostin conceded that "Biden lost the debate" and wondered aloud if "maybe he needs to go."

They got their wish when Biden stepped down a month later, making way for his vice president, Kamala Harris, to launch her own bid for the presidency.

At the time, Jill Bidenpraised her husband's performanceas "great," championing him for having "answered every question" put to him.

But two years into Trump's second term as president, after Harris lost the 2024 election, has caused many in the Biden inner circle to come forward with their closely held doubts.

Campaign biographer Chris Whipple alleged in his 2025 autopsy of the Biden term-two campaign that its managers and critical functionaries operated in a "fog of delusion and denial" regardinghis cognitive capabilities. Whipple claimed that the Biden camp was "uncomfortable even then with the prospect of the president having an interview in real time with a reporter" in their justification of keep him at arm's length. "So there's no doubt that they were protecting the president, they were minimizing his contact with others."

U.S. setting up Ebola quarantine facility in Kenya, officials say

CBS News

The U.S. is in the process of setting up a quarantine facility in Kenya for Americans who were exposed toEbolaor infected with the deadly illness, multiple officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed to CBS News on Wednesday.

A Trump administration official told CBS News the facility is designed to provide access to high-quality care for Americans who would need to quicklyget out of Congoand quarantine without the risks of a lengthy trip back to the U.S.

The effort to set up the Kenya facility was first reported by theWall Street Journal.

The move will potentially lead to U.S. citizens being kept from reentering the U.S. A former CDC official who previously worked on the Ebola response told CBS News, "It would be unbelievably unethical and irresponsible to maroon Americans given Kenya doesn't have a proper Level 4 containment facility or much experience" dealing with Ebola.

Over 230 people in Congo are believed to have died from Ebola in the latest outbreak of the disease.

At the White House on Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said during a meeting of President Trump's Cabinet that multiple government agencies were working hard to contain the outbreak to where it's currently located.

"We cannot and will not allow any cases of Ebola to enter the United States," Rubio said.

The Trump administration official said the Kenya facility will enable Americans in the region who contract Ebola to receive lifesaving care as quickly as possible without having to spend over 12 hours on a medevac flight.

Treatment capabilities at the facility are expected to be able to care for the full spectrum of the disease, including critical care needs, though each case will be evaluated for forward transport for more advanced care as appropriate in order to maximize patient outcomes, the Trump administration official said.

An American doctor wasinfected with Ebolawhile working with a medical missionary organization in Democratic Republic of Congo. After being evacuated, he said last week he's feeling "cautiously optimistic" as he fights the virusat a hospitalin Germany.

Sam Elliott Says His “Landman” Character's Frailty Is 'Very True' to His Own 'Hard Life'

Sam Elliott says his Landman character T.L. Norris' struggles with aging and physical decline are “very true” to his own life

NEED TO KNOW

  • The actor, 81, reflected on the emotional pool scene in season 2, in which T.L. opens up to his son Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) about watching his body fail him

  • Despite six decades in Hollywood, Elliott also revealed he’s still learning from his costars

Sam Elliottknows a thing or two aboutplaying hard-living characters— and these days, he says the role feels increasingly familiar.

The Oscar-nominated actor, 81, opened up about his role as T.L. Norris in the hit dramaLandman, revealing that some of his character’sstruggles with aging and physical declinehit particularly close to home.

Elliott reflected on one of season 2’s most heart-wrenching storylines, in which T.L., the father ofBilly Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris, grapples with the realities of a body that can no longer keep up with him.

“The truth of it is, [that scene] is very true to where I am at this point in my life physically,” Elliott said in a new interview withVariety. “Not mentally, but physically. I’ve had a hard life. I’ve been an athlete all my life, and I’ve been a laborer all my life, and I’m paying for it now.”

The moment Elliott referenced came during a heartbreaking scene in the Jan. 4 episode, when T.L. found himself trapped in a swimming pool after realizing he could no longer pull himself out on his own.

“With my knees and my hip, I can’t f---ing stand right now,” T.L. told Tommy as his son prepared to help him from the water.

The conversation quickly turned emotional as T.L. reflected on living in a retirement home before moving in with Tommy and Angela (Ali Larter).

“It’s a curse my mind is sharp,” T.L. told his son through tears. “I get to sit here and process all the ways my body is failing me.”

The exchange marked a turning point in the father-son relationship, culminating in a hug between the pair as Tommy encouraged his father to consider physical therapy.

Earlier this year, Elliott toldPEOPLEthat the season would focus heavily on the fractured relationship between father and son as they attempt to rebuild years of lost trust.

“This character I’m playing is a fractured man,” Elliott said at the time. “It’s gone on for him for years, since his wife turned inward, and he waited forever for her to come out of it, and she never really did. But consequently, [Tommy] paid for it, while [T.L.] checked out.”

“We’re going to spend much of this season seeing T.L. early on, but then it becomes both of us, I think, healing that relationship that’s falling apart,” he added.

Despite a career spanning more than six decades, Elliott said he’s still finding new ways to grow as an actor, including from his onscreen son.

“I’m working with Billy Bob Thornton, so I’m going to be learning something from him this time around,” Elliott toldVariety. “Even though he’s playing my son, he’s still got something to offer. He’s been in this game for a long time. He’s not only a brilliant actor, but he’s not a bad director or a writer.”

Elliott also praisedFrancesca Xuereb, who appears this season as Cheyenne, a stripper hired by Tommy to help T.L. with physical therapy, calling the experience of working with the actress a highlight.

"A public narrative has been constructed based on a partial, out-of-context, and distorted vision, creating a perception of guilt that is far from the truth. I know that dismantling it will require time, effort and intense dedication," he wrote in Spanish.

"I make this decision with sadness, but convinced that it is what is best for both the company and myself. I face this process with serenity and fortitude, and I need to concentrate all my energy on proving my innocence," he added.
