The teenage daughter of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made her first known visit to a sacred family mausoleum, a step that experts saybolstered her status as her father's potential heir.

The visit, which occurred on New Year's Day on Thursday, even sparked speculation that the girl, reportedly named Kim Ju Ae and aged about 13, could be named a high-level official at the upcoming ruling Workers' Party congress.

Images carried by North Korea's state media on Friday showed Kim Ju Ae standing in the front row with her parents and deeply bowing at Pyongyang's Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang, where the embalmed bodies of her late grandfather and great-grandfather are on display.

The palace is "a place that symbolizes legitimacy of the North Korean regime" and her visit there ahead of the Workers' Party congress is a politically orchestrated move, said Cheong Seong-Chang, deputy head of the private Sejong Institute in South Korea.

Kim Jong Un, 41, is the third generation of his family to rule North Korea since the country's foundation in 1948. He often marks key state anniversaries by visiting the Kumsusan palace and paying respect to his father Kim Jong Il and grandfather Kim Il Sung.

Cheong predicted that Kim Jong Un could give his daughter the first secretary post at the Workers' Party, the party's No. 2 job, at the congress.

Other experts say she is too young to accept such a high-profile post and might be provided with lower-level jobs.

The congress, the first of its kind in five years, is meant to establish new priorities in state policies and reshuffle officials. North Korea hasn't said when it will hold it, but South Korea's spy agency said it will likely be held either in January or February.

Since first appearing in state media in November 2022, Kim Ju Ae has accompanied her father at a slew of events including military parades and missile launches.

In September, Kim Ju Ae took her on his visit to Beijing.During New Years' Day celebrations this week, she kissed her father on the cheek, showing their closeness.

In January 2024, South Korea's spy agency said it viewed Kim Ju Ae as her father's likely heir. Some outside experts disagree with that assessment, citing Kim Jong Un's relatively young age and the extremely male-dominated nature of North Korea's power hierarchy.

Off-duty ICE officer allegedly kills man firing gun outside apartment complex: DHS

An off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer allegedly shot and killed an armed man outside of the federal agent's Los Angeles apartment complex, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The shooting occurred late New Year's Eve in the Northridge neighborhood, DHS said. ICE is under the supervision of DHS.

The off-duty ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officer was in his apartment "when he heard what he suspected were multiple gunshots" at approximately 10:45 p.m. local time Wednesday, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.

As the suspected gunfire grew louder, the officer went outside with his ICE-authorized firearm and encountered a man "armed with what appeared to be a long rifle" upon rounding the corner of a building in the apartment complex, according to McLaughlin.

After the ICE officer identified himself as law enforcement, the individual allegedly pointed his firearm at the officer and did not put it down when ordered, McLaughlin noted.

"When the subject refused to comply, the officer fired defensively with his service weapon at the subject to disarm him," McLaughlin said. "The subject fired at least three rounds at the officer."

The ICE officer then went back to his apartment to retrieve his ICE-issued body armor "to better protect himself against rifle rounds" and reported the shooting to the Los Angeles Police Department, according to McLaughlin.

When LAPD officers arrived, they found the shot individual, who was pronounced dead at the scene, McLaughlin noted. The ICE officer was uninjured, she said.

Sources said it appears that the man had no connection to the ICE officer before the shooting.

ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility is coordinating with the LAPD in the ongoing investigation, McLaughlin said.

The LAPD confirmed it responded to a call of shots fired involving a federal agent, but did not release any additional details.

Authorities have not released the names of the ICE officer or deceased man.

Image: Johnathan Everett Boley (Alabama Law Enforcement Agency)

A search is underway in Alabama for a 4-year-old boy who has been missing since Wednesday morning, and whose father has been arrested on a separate explosives-related charge.

Johnathan Everett Boley was last seen at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday near Highway 195, in a wooded and rural area of Jasper, Alabama, according to theAlabama Law Enforcement Agency. Jasper is a small city located about 40 miles northwest of Birmingham.

He is described as white with blond hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a yellow Mickey Mouse shirt, black pants and Paw Patrol shoes.

The Walker County Sheriff's Office received a call about the missing child around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sheriff Nick Smith told reporters Thursday.

Smith said it was reported to authorities that Johnathan was with his 6-year-old brother and their dog when he disappeared. It was not immediately clear where his older brother is.

Law enforcement searched Johnathan's home and launched an air and ground search using helicopters with thermal detection and canines that went until 3 a.m. and resumed later Thursday morning, Smith said.

Explosives-related charge

Smith told reporters that explosive devices were found on the child's father's property during the search and law enforcement had to "take care" of the devices before they could execute a thorough search warrant.

The father was arrested on an explosives-related charge, Smith said. He said the charge had "nothing to do" with the search for Johnathan, but "it is still a factor that is hindering our search," Smith said.

Smith described the father, whom he did not name, as being formerly in the military.

It's not clear why explosives were at the home.

"Neighbors have said they've been hearing explosions for weeks now. They didn't really know where it was coming from. The morning before the [missing person] report came in, one of the neighbors reported that they heard an explosion about 4 a.m. that morning, they just didn't know where it came from. Can't say that that's in any kind of connection to the missing child," Smith said.

Johnathan's parents are separated, and the child's mother moved to Florida last year. As part of the custody agreement the father was given five days a year for visitation, Smith said.

The mother went to Alabama from Florida on Wednesday evening and is cooperating with authorities, according to the sheriff. The father was interviewed by the FBI on Wednesday, he said.

The search

The area where Johnathan was reported missing is heavily wooded and rural.

Smith said there isn't any indication the child is in the woods, but they continue to search the area.

"We've got no thermal, no imagery from the helicopter and drones," he explained.

Smith also noted that the dog Johnathan was last with is still missing.

"Talking to one of the neighbors, that dog showed up pretty much every day on their game cameras at their corn feeder. The last time that he has the dog on his camera was on the 26th, the afternoon of the 26th," the sheriff said.

At least eight potential explosive devices were found across the street from the father's home in a wooded area, halting the volunteer search effort, Smith said.

The devices were later cleared as not explosive, and volunteers can recommence helping with the search at 7 a.m. Friday, he said.

Smith commended the support in the search saying 126 first responders from multiple nearby agencies and 161 volunteers helped cover over 500 acres on Thursday alone.

Key Points

  • Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer address the question we all want answered: Did Eleven die in the finale?

  • The creators reveal the one scene that hints to the live-action spinoff they're planning.

  • What does the future of Stranger Things look like from here? "There's one other thing I can't talk about," Matt teases.

Warning: This article contains spoilers from theStranger Thingsseries finale, "The Rightside Up."

MattandRoss Duffer, the creators ofStranger Things, gather the morning of New Year's Day on the West Coast over separate Zoom screens. The night before, they finally unveiled the thing they've been planning in their minds for years: the 2-hour, 8-minute conclusion to the worldwide television sensation.

As part of multiple surprise talent appearances at select theaters where Netflix displayed the event on the big screen, the brotherly filmmaking duo popped in at the AMC Americana in Glendale for the occasion. "So many of them were decked out in merch," Ross tellsEntertainment Weeklyof the fans in attendance. "It was such a fun experience and what a great way to end the year."

Today, the Duffers sit down for their final press rounds, including this interview with EW. They address some of our burning questions — notably the true fate ofMillie Bobby Brown's Eleven — and identify the one scene from the finale that teases the upcoming live-action spinoff in the works. (It's not the Montauk callout!)

Netflix Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) on the 'Stranger Things' series finale

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: As I was heading into this interview just moments ago, I saw that there's a massive spike in people Googling, "Did Eleven die onStranger Things?"

MATT DUFFER:It's a good question! I don't think they're gonna find the answer, though, on Google.

Do you foresee any point, maybe on aStranger ThingsDay 20 years from now, where you would definitively answer that question for fans?

ROSS DUFFER:Didn't [The Sopranoscreator] David Chase break down and finally say what happened to Tony? I can't remember. I think he may have, but see?It was so much later. Our goal, our hope is to leave it up to the fans, ultimately, and the audience in terms of what they believe, just as we leave it up to our characters in that basement to decide what they believe or not.

How did you guys get to that point of striking the right balance of ambiguity when it comes to Eleven's fate? Because, obviously, when you choose that route, you have to leave enough evidence on both sides to argue one way or the other.

MATT: Yeah, that was the intention. We spent probably more time talking about Eleven's fate than anything else as we were working on season 5. A lot of the dialogue you hear in the finale reflects the kind of debates that we were having in the writers' room. Hopper's [David Harbour] speech to her, he's expressing what a lot of us were expressing in the room, but then there was the flip side of that argument, which is what Kali [Linnea Berthelsen] was saying.

And then there's the question of: Is there an in-between version of that? Does something like that exist? And, if so, what would that look like? Ultimately, we did decide there has to be some sort of sacrifice. It's funny when you see people getting frustrated with Kali, because of course, she's telling you what you don't want to hear, but it's the truth, right? There's a reality to what she's saying. Eleven, whether she lives or dies, makes a major sacrifice. Either she's dead or she's left her friends behind for a different life. But I think that sacrifice is ultimately very courageous and heroic. She's choosing to do that to prevent other kids from experiencing what she's experienced.

And so the ending, we wanted it to be from Mike's [Finn Wolfhard] point of view and the kids' point of view. So they don't know, and because they don't know, the audience doesn't know, because if we knew and they knew, then it defeats the entire purpose of her sacrifice.

Ross, in an interview withTudum, you said, "There was never a version of the story where Eleven was hanging out with the gang at the end." Were there multiple versions of this ending that you guys were throwing around?

ROSS:She was never gonna be there. It was always gonna end in aD&Dcampaign and then leaving and shutting the door on their childhood. That's been planned for eight years. I think it really just came down to figuring out the story that Mike was telling and getting to that moment of, "I believe." This all happened very early in the writers' room on season 5. And then Holly [Nell Fisher], of course, came about as we realized she was gonna play a major role in the season and that passing of the torch. So that's really how that scene evolved over the years, but it was very, very early on in the writing process that we locked in on what those final 10 minutes were. They never changed, ultimately, throughout the course of writing the show and/or in production.

Netflix The final scene with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) on 'Stranger Things'

That final shot that you leave us with Eleven and the waterfalls, was that on location or at the studio in Atlanta?

MATT:It was really cool. It was on location in Iceland, but it was a skeleton crew. It was all Icelandic, and we were out there maybe for four hours or so. Millie was actually standing right there out on the cliff. It's fun shooting in other countries because out here, they forced us to wire her, but Millie was a badass. She just stood there. We had a drone flying over her. It was beautiful. That rainbow that's there was not added. That was actually there.

ROSS:The only thing that's added at all with visual effects is just the small town in the distance. Everything else is real.

Were you able to schedule it so that would be Millie's last day on set?

MATT:Yeah, it was her last day on set, but it was so many months later [after principal photography]. That day didn't feel like a goodbye day. Her last day on set [in Atlanta] was actually [when] we filmed her "killing herself" scene. We filmed her vanishing while standing in the gate, and then we filmed her entering the Radio Shack and climbing down into the tunnels. The climbing down into the tunnels was the very last shot.

ROSS:The Iceland shoot was actually pretty recently. It was over the summer. We wrapped production, we were all so tired, and we were like, "How are we gonna do this waterfall scene?" We just didn't have the time to figure it out during production. So we waited for a gap right after Millie finishedEnola[Holmes 3] and we had like a week opening and we said, "All right, let's just fly to Iceland and shoot this thing." So it was the last thing we ever did on the show.

MATT:Millie was in London, so it did not take her long to get to Iceland. It took us f---ing forever to get out there. I've always wanted to go to Iceland and I think we were there for, like, 24 hours.

ROSS:Yeah, because we were still in post[-production]. There was talk of having someone else direct and we're like, "Absolutely not. We're gonna be there." We gotta be there, but considering we were in the middle of deep, deep post-production at the time, it was not the easiest thing to do.

Netflix The Mind Flayer in the 'Stranger Things' series finale

I also wanna ask you about the Mind Flayer. In your head, is this leviathan creature that we meet in the finale the true form of the Mind Flayer and the shadow substance is a different form of it? How did you envision the mechanics of that working out?

ROSS:I see it as a version of what we did in season 3 in that the true form of it is the cloud, but it can build itself out, which is what it did in a massive way in the Abyss. But its self is that shadow self, the hive mind version of it, that maybe is its soul or its true self. But we like that there's some mystery with the Mind Flayer, that we don't explain everything because, in a way, it is unknowable in that Lovecraftian way.

MATT:But whatever's up there in the Abyss, they've severed the bridge. There is no connection anymore. There's no way of anything in the Abyss from reaching Hawkins again.

I've noticed a lot of fans online asking the question, "What is the glowing rock substance that Henry finds in the briefcase in the flashback?" I just took that as particles from the Abyss or the Mind Flayer itself. Do you have a specific definition for what exactly was in that briefcase?

ROSS:We do. It is the one thing that we purposely left a bit of a question mark on that theoretically will be answered later down the line. But that really was the one tiny little crack in the door that we wanted to leave open.

Netflix Henry Creel finds a mysterious substance in the 'Stranger Things' series finale

This came up in the press leading up to the finale episode, that there is a particular scene in the finale that may hint at the spinoff that you guys are developing. Are you at a point when you can say what that scene is?

ROSS:That's that!

MATT:I just said it. The rock! Which is good because if that's what people are really wondering and asking about...

ROSS:Not to say that the spinoff is about a rock or a mine.

MATT:No, in terms of learning the origins of this thing. I don't want to mislead people in thinking that that's really what the spinoff is about. It's going to answer that question, but it's its own mythology. So it's very, very different. It's not a spinoff about the Mind Flayer. I don't want to set up false expectations, but for people who are frustrated that they don't know what exactly where that scientist came from, how he's in the cave, what the glowing rock is, at some point, that will be answered for you.

This leads me into a big question: What does the future ofStranger Thingslook like now? We have the animated series coming up this year; the Broadway show is still going, still playing in London; you're developing a live-action spinoff that you're talking about. How would you answer that question for yourself?

MATT:To us, it's just one step at a time. Right now, everything you said is all we have planned...Well, there's one other thing I can't talk about, so I just sort of lied to you, that is also really cool. But the live-action spinoff is what the main focus is right now. I wish I could talk about it more, but we have a specific idea or philosophy for how the show and theStranger Thingsuniverse, if you wanna call it that, can continue. It's very different, I would say, than something likeGame of ThronesorStar Wars, because we're just not like that.

ROSS:And we're very proud ofTales from '85and the play, but those are mining the last remaining small gaps in the narrative that we told over the course ofStranger Things. So to be able to move forward, we have to build out a new mythology because otherwise we're just gonna keep finding these little narrow gaps and it's just gonna get narrower and narrower and more forced. So the goal is to break it wide open and do something very new and very different.

MATT:I have to say, it has been so fun just creating new characters and a new mythology, just because you're starting from the ground floor. It's exhilarating, and I can't wait to say more about it when I'm allowed to, but Netflix PR is listening in.

How hands-on do both of you foresee yourselves being onStranger Thingsmoving forward? It's not a secret that you guys have other Netflix shows that you're working on at the moment. You also have a deal with Paramount, you're going to be making movies very soon.

MATT:It's different than the shows that we're producing. We're super stoked about the two shows that are coming out, fairly soon, actually:Something Very Bad Is Going to HappenandThe Boroughs. But our philosophy there more or less is we're finding talent and creatives that we deeply respect and helping them get the show off the ground, mentoring them, teaching them about what we've learned, the mistakes we've made so hopefully they don't make the same mistakes. That's sort of our role as far as that's concerned.

We're gonna be much more creatively and deeply involved in theStranger Thingsspinoff. It's a story that we came up with, and...Man, I'm boxing myself in. I can't tell you much about it. I should just be very vague and say, "We're gonna be extremely involved in it. We're not gonna be showrunning it, however." So it will be a step back, but obviously we're gonna be involved day-to-day. We're gonna get back to work on it on Monday, so it is not a passive involvement. It's our goal to make it an incredible show. We're gonna be there from beginning to end.

Brazil's Bolsonaro leaves hospital and returns to jail in capital Brasilia

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — Former Brazilian PresidentJair Bolsonaroleft a hospital in capital Brasilia on Thursday, a week after he underwent a double hernia surgery. A car took the embattled ex-leader back to the federal police headquarters where he is serving his 27-year prison sentence for leading a coup d'etat aimed at keeping him in office.

Hospital DF Star confirmed Bolsonaro was released after some other minor medical procedures after the double hernia surgery that was completed without complications.

Brazil's Supreme Court approved the release of the former president, who governed from 2019 to 2022, for the surgery.

Supreme Court JusticeAlexandre de Moraes, who sentenced Bolsonaro to prison, denied the former president's request for house arrest after he leaves the hospital.

Bolsonaro has undergone several other medical procedures since he was stabbed in the abdomen during a campaign rally in 2018.

Bolsonaro has no contact with the few other inmates at the federal police headquarters in Brasilia, where he is held and where his 12-square-meter (around 130-square-foot) room has a bed, a private bathroom, air conditioning, a television and a desk.

In December, Bolsonaro shook Brazilian politics again by appointing his eldest son, Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, to become his political party'spresidential candidate in next year's election, challenging incumbentLuiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Neither Flávio Bolsonaro nor former first-lady Michelle Bolsonaro made comments about the former leader returning to prison after his hospitalization.

Michelle Bolsonaro said in her social media channels that "there is a Brazil of good people which loves you and prays for you."

"We will beat the bad days," she wrote.

Bolsonaro and several of his allieswere convicted in Septemberby a panel of Supreme Court justices of attempting to overthrow Brazil's democratic system following his 2022 election defeat.

The plot included plans to kill Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and de Moraes. There was also a plan to encourage an insurrection in early 2023.

Bolsonaro was also convicted on charges that include leading an armed criminal organization and attempting the violent abolition of the democratic rule of law. He has denied any wrongdoing.
