Group of individuals in a somber setting, likely a church or chapel.

One of the best parts of theKnives Outfranchise is its film's ensemble casts. Anchored by Daniel Craig, who plays detective Benoit Blanc, each movie—including the newestWake Up Dead Man—features a new collection of characters, each played by a standout actor.

"It's just the nature obviously of whodunits: Every character's a suspect," CraigtoldT&C. "Every character carries weight. I wonder if that's one of the reasons that they're tempting to do, because your character might be the murderer, or might be the victim. All of the casts we've had, bar none, have come wanting to be involved with the overused word of 'an ensemble,' but it is a genuine ensemble and I know the difference. Having people come in and just be all they care about is injecting as much good energy into the job as they possibly can and bringing and all bringing their A game and all just raising [the bar] and just being very, very, very funny. It's a joy for me. It's just a complete joy."

Ground cinnamon recalled in 14 states over lead risk. See where.

A potential lead contamination is to blame for a ground cinnamon recall in 14 states, federal officials announced.

According to a Dec. 9 posting on theU.S. Food and Drug Administration's website, the cinnamon was sold by TBC Distribution Corporate in Brooklyn, New York.

Officials say the recall was announced after an analysis by the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets found elevated levels of lead in Lucky Foods-branded cinnamon powder.

According to therecall, the affected cinnamon has a best-by date of Sept. 15, 2027, and "is packaged in a vacuum or modified atmosphere 40g pouch with a brown label indicating Lucky Foods brand at the top of the pouch."

This recall is tied to a public health alert about lead contamination in cinnamon products that has been ongoing since 2024,according to the FDA. The recalled Lucky Foods brand cinnamon was added to the alert on Dec. 10.

<p style=Consumer Reports, the nonprofit known for testing and monitoring consumer-facing policy and products, released its annual risky food report in April, naming the 10 foods of 2024 that were subject to the most recalls and/or associated with the largest illness outbreaks. USA TODAY broke it down further on a what-you-need-to-know basis.

" style="max-width:100%; height:auto; border-radius:6px; margin:10px 0;" loading="lazy" /> <p style=Deli meat is somewhat of a "risky" food as it is often associated with the spread of listeria, such as in the 2024 case of the Boar's Head listeria outbreak that killed 10. Listeria monocytogenes is a hardy germ that can survive in very low temperatures but thrives in cool and damp places. It can, and will, happily live on foods in your or your grocery store's storage area, and the process for mass-producing the meat lends itself to plenty of opportunities for contamination.

" style="max-width:100%; height:auto; border-radius:6px; margin:10px 0;" loading="lazy" /> <p style=Produce, like the cucumbers recalled due to a salmonella outbreak that infected 113 people across 23 states, can become adulterated with harmful bacteria through fecal contamination, which can occur through wastewater, water in the growing area, fertilizer and the proximity of the growing area to livestock.

" style="max-width:100%; height:auto; border-radius:6px; margin:10px 0;" loading="lazy" /> <p style=Raw dairy, which is always unsafe to consume and illegal to sell in some states, poses a risk when it's not pasteurized. Dairy pasteurization, or heating milk products to a high enough temperature to kill harmful bacteria, has been practiced since the 1920s and has resulted in illnesses commonly spread via milk, such as listeriosis, diphtheria and tuberculosis, becoming less prevalent.

" style="max-width:100%; height:auto; border-radius:6px; margin:10px 0;" loading="lazy" /> <p style=Cotija and queso fresco cheese are made from unpasteurized milk, meaning they carry an increased risk. One producer, Rizo-Lopez Foods, was shut down in October 2024 after its cheeses were linked to a years-long listeria outbreak that killed two people and made dozens of others sick.

" style="max-width:100%; height:auto; border-radius:6px; margin:10px 0;" loading="lazy" /> <p style=Eggs can become contaminated via the same means as cucumbers and other raw produce, especially if they have a cracked shell.

" style="max-width:100%; height:auto; border-radius:6px; margin:10px 0;" loading="lazy" /> <p style=Like other raw produce, onions can become infected via fecal contamination. In 2024, E. coli-contaminated slivered onions on McDonald's Quarter Pounders triggered some locations to stop serving the burger temporarily.

" style="max-width:100%; height:auto; border-radius:6px; margin:10px 0;" loading="lazy" /> <p style=Like cucumbers and onions, leafy greens are easily contaminated with bacteria like E. coli, as in the case of the Solata Foods spinach recall in 2024.

" style="max-width:100%; height:auto; border-radius:6px; margin:10px 0;" loading="lazy" /> <p style=Organic carrots were linked to a major E. coli outbreak in late 2024, leaving at least 39 ill and one dead.

" style="max-width:100%; height:auto; border-radius:6px; margin:10px 0;" loading="lazy" /> <p style=Ready-to-eat/cooked poultry and meat have been the source of multiple major recalls and foodborne illness outbreaks in recent years. The same issue arises with RTE foods as with deli meat; the conditions they are made and stored under are often ideal for bacteria such as listeria to grow. In 2024, millions of pounds of RTE foods were recalled by BrucePac for listeria contamination.

" style="max-width:100%; height:auto; border-radius:6px; margin:10px 0;" loading="lazy" />

Symptoms of short-term lead exposure

Short-term exposures to low levels of lead may not cause any apparent symptoms. Increased blood lead levels may be the only sign of lead exposure.

The FDA saidthat if a child is exposed to enough lead for weeks or months on end, it can cause permanent damage to the central nervous system. "This can result in learning disorders, developmental defects, and other long-term health problems,"the FDA wrote.

Chronic lead exposure can cause kidney dysfunction, hypertension, and neurocognitive effects in adults.

Image: Nobel peace laureate Maria Corina Machado (Odd Andersen / AFP - Getty Images)

Rough seas. An almost moonless night. And a small fishing boat crossing a treacherous stretch of the Caribbean Sea, carrying precious cargo with a target on her back.

Those were the conditions that Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado faced when she made perhaps the most perilous part of her journey to collect her Nobel Peace Prize in Norway, according to the U.S. Special Forces veteran who planned and aided her escape.

"There were 5- to 6-foot waves, maybe even bigger waves than that, and we were doing this in the middle of the night," Bryan Stern, who heads the Tampa, Florida-basedGrey Bull Rescue Foundation, told NBC News. "It was pitch black, almost no moonlight. All of us were very cold and wet."

But Machado never lost her composure, or her lunch, Stern said, as the skiff lurched in the rough sea and plied through waters that have been targeted, of late, by the U.S. missile strikes on suspected drug smuggling boats.

"She did fine," Stern said. "They call her the Iron Lady for a reason."

Stern dubbed the extrication operation: "Operation Golden Dynamite."

"She is overwhelmingly the highest-profile person we've rescued," said Stern, who noted this was the 800th mission his organization carried out.

Machado, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in October for leading the opposition against Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro's regime, said on Thursday that she got help from the U.S. government to leave her hiding place in Venezuela andcollect her award.

Stern insisted the operation was paid for "by a series of unnamed donors," and the U.S. government was aware of what was going on but not directly involved.

"We designed and implemented the extrication of María Corina Machado from Venezuela to a friendly country from which she was flown to her next destination," Stern said. "We were not hired by anyone in the U.S. government."

In fact, Stern added, "I've never received a thank-you note, let alone a dollar, from the U.S. government."

The White House did not respond to an email from NBC News seeking information about its possible involvement in Machado's escape.

Stern said he began planning the mission on Dec. 5.

"We really wanted to get her to the Nobel prize ceremony on time," he said. "But there were a number of obstacles."

Getting Machado out of Venezuela required disguising her appearance. Stern did not say exactly what they did to get her out and wouldn't comment ona Wall Street Journal accountthat she, at some point, donned a wig.

"Her face was a problem because she is the most famous person in Venezuela outside of Maduro," he said, noting that there are billboards with Machado's image everywhere in Venezuela.

The Maduro regime was using Machado's facial biometrics to try to locate her, he said.

"People in the Maduro regime call it the 'Hunt for Maria' the way we would talk about the 'Hunt for Bin Laden'," Stern said. "We had to use a lot of deception, even with some members of her own team."

Stern said he met Machado for the first time on Tuesday evening. He would not say exactly when or where he rendezvoused with Machado, but it involved her taking a small skiff from a fishing village and transferring her at sea to the somewhat bigger fishing boat that he was on.

"I was on the second leg of the operation," he said. "I got very close to Venezuela."

But Machado's departure, which was supposed to happen Tuesday morning, was delayed till evening by a broken engine, he said. And what should have been a three or four-hour trip turned into a roughly 16-hour ordeal.

"I first met her at sea," Stern said. "We used a fishing boat to get her to her flight."

Stern said the flight took off from Curaçao, which is about 40 miles north of Venezuela and is a self-governing island that is part of the Netherlands.

"I would say we transited through Curaçao," Stern said. "She wasn't in Curaçao. She never cleared immigration in Curaçao."

Stern said this was the most challenging mission he and his group have undertaken. As for Machado, Stern said he's a big fan.

"I'll admit I'm starstruck," he said. "She's a hero of mine."

Drone shows aftermath of California gas explosion that hospitalized 6

Drone footage showing the aftermath of anexplosion in Californiathat injured six people and damaged several homes is circulating online.

The drone, which flies over the explosion site, captures a building surrounded by debris, vehicles with cracked windshields and smoke everywhere.

Other footage, captured on a home surveillance system the morning of Thursday, Dec. 11, was later shared on theAlameda County Fire Department's Facebook page. In the surveillance video, debris can be seen shooting into the air and falling onto the nearby street.

Six people were injured in a fire triggered by an underground gas explosion in Hayward, California, on Dec. 11.

The department also shared footage from first responders. As they approach, a cloud of smoke surrounds the area as firefighters use hoses to fight off the flames.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) previously told USA TODAY that it was notified around 7:35 a.m. about a construction crew thatstruck an underground gas linewhile digging at a property. The construction crew is not affiliated with PG&E, the company said.

According to the company, utility crews were dispatched and found gas leaking at two separate locations. While crews stopped the flow of gas at around 9:25 a.m., the explosion happened about 10 minutes later.

Fire officials said three buildings were destroyed by the blast, and other buildings near the site were damaged. The department added that six people were taken to local hospitals, and all residents were accounted for.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said onDec. 11 that it is investigatingthe explosion. PG&E also said it is investigating.

The NTSB told USA TODAY on Dec. 12 that investigators will begin documenting the accident scene and conducting a visual examination of the pipeline and equipment involved.

USA TODAY also contacted the fire department on Dec. 12, but has not received a response.

Pennsylvania:What caused a deadly explosion at a US Steel plant? New details released.

Footage shows home appliances surrounded by debris

Altogether, 75 firefighters responded to the scene. The explosion and fire were escalated to a three-alarm fire. According to Fire Alarm Houston,a three-alarm fire"could involve a larger building, multiple floors, or a hazardous materials situation" and usually involves more firefighters.

The fire department shared a series of bodycam and surveillance clips captured on the day of the explosion.

At one point, a firefighter walks closer to the site, and crew members can be seen spraying water on the flames. Orange flames can be seen blazing in the background as crews attempt to put them out.

Another clip captured that day shows a stove with part of the roof caved in on top of it. The video also shows firefighters and a dog walking on the ground covered in scorched debris from the building.

Fire officials said the Red Cross is helping families displaced by the fire, and the cause of the explosion and blaze is under investigation.

What's next in the NTSB's investigation?

According to the NTSB, agency investigators will collect further information, such as:

  • Human performance data relevant to the accident and response.

  • Witness statements.

  • Pipeline operating practices and procedures.

  • Pipeline system maps and historical records.

  • Relevant pipeline pressures before and during the accident.

  • Pipeline maintenance records, integrity management plans/records, and safety management system plan/records.

  • Local environmental conditions, including soil conditions for buried pipelines.

  • The extent and path of released gas.

  • Any available surveillance video, including from doorbell cameras.

The agency said witnesses can send surveillance video or other relevant information to witness@ntsb.gov.
