The Boston Bruins have plenty of reasons to feel encouraged about their 10-4-1 start. They have already produced several impressive victories, established themselves near the top of the Atlantic Division and received important contributions throughout the lineup.
But Saturday's 5-4 overtime victory against the Chicago Blackhawks revealed a concern that could become significant.
Boston allowed 41 shots and needed 37 saves from Michael DiPietro to survive. The Bruins also required a dramatic comeback after trailing by two goals during the third period. Now the Vegas Golden Knights arrive at TD Garden on Monday, creating another opportunity to evaluate Boston's defensive consistency.
The Bruins demonstrated tremendous resilience against Chicago.
Morgan Geekie tied the game with only 12 seconds remaining, and Elias Lindholm scored the overtime winner. David Pastrnak also reached a major franchise milestone, moving past Patrice Bergeron for third place on Boston's all-time goals list.
Those moments made the victory memorable.
But allowing 41 shots against a struggling Chicago team is not an ideal formula for sustained success.
Boston relied heavily on DiPietro to keep the game within reach. The Bruins cannot expect their goaltenders to handle that type of workload every night without consequences.
Monday's game gives Boston little time to celebrate. The Golden Knights have been among the NHL's more accomplished franchises in recent seasons and bring a different level of experience than Chicago's developing roster.
Boston must improve its defensive-zone coverage, limit extended possessions and reduce the number of quality opportunities allowed.
That responsibility extends beyond the defensemen.
Forwards must support the puck, prevent easy entries and help clear traffic around the net. The Bruins have demonstrated that they can generate enough offense to recover from mistakes. But relying on late comebacks against stronger opponents becomes increasingly difficult.

The Bruins have already shown that they possess the scoring ability and determination to compete in the Atlantic Division.
The next challenge is producing more complete performances. Saturday's win featured an impressive comeback, but it also required Boston to overcome problems created earlier in the game. Monday's contest begins at 7 p.m. ET at TD Garden.
For the Bruins, the goal should be straightforward. Keep the offensive energy that fueled Saturday's comeback while reducing the defensive mistakes that made it necessary.
A cleaner performance against Vegas would provide another encouraging sign that Boston's strong opening month can carry into November.
