Trump administration argues Iran war effectively ‘terminated’ before 60-day deadline for congressional approval

Just hours before a crucial deadline, the Trump administrationhas argued thewar in Iranhas been effectively “terminated” under the ongoing ceasefire.

Under the War Powers Resolution,President Donald Trumpfaced a 60-day clock — set to expire Friday — to eitherend the war in Iran or secure congressional approval to continue. Now, a senior administration official tells theAssociated Pressthe U.S. and Iran haven’t exchanged fire since April 7, and that the hostilities have been “terminated.”

A U.S. official also toldReuters: "For War Powers Resolution purposes, the hostilities that began on Saturday, February 28, have terminated.”

Earlier Thursday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth argued the 60-day clock was paused under the ceasefire.

“We are in a ceasefire right now, which our understanding means the 60-day clock pauses or stops in a ceasefire,” he said during aSenate Armed Services Committee hearing.

“I do not believe the statute would support that,” Democratic Senator Tim Kaine replied. “I think the 60 days runs maybe tomorrow, and it’s going to pose a really important legal question for the administration there.”

Senate Democrats also tried — and failed — for a sixth time to end the Iran war by forcing a War Powers Resolution vote Thursday.

“After two months of war, 13 service members’ lives lost, and billions of dollars squandered, it is time we recognized that the price we have paid is already too high. We must say no to this unauthorized war of choice,” Democratic Senator Adam Schiff said in astatement.

Republican Senators Susan Collins and Rand Paul joined nearly every Democrat in supporting the measure.

“The Constitution gives Congress an essential role in decisions of war and peace, and the War Powers Act establishes a clear 60-day deadline for Congress to either authorize or end U.S. involvement in foreign hostilities,” Collins said in astatement. “That deadline is not a suggestion; it is a requirement.”

Still, many Republicans continue to defend Trump’s war with Iran. The president has “the right to use the military to defend the freedom of this country,” Republican Senator Rick Scott toldCNN’s Kaitlan CollinsThursday night.

When pressed about the cost of the war, Scott replied: "How do you put a price tag on limiting somebody’s ability to kill you?”

The president has also claimed the U.S. “already won” the war with Iran.

“We’ve already won, but I want to win by a bigger margin,” Trump toldNewsmax’s Greta Van SusterenThursday.

“But we have. We have destroyed their navy, destroyed their air force, destroyed all of their — if you look at their anti-aircraft equipment, their radar equipment, their leadership, their leadership is destroyed,” he continued.

The Independenthas requested comment from the White House.

US charges Mexican government, law enforcement officials in alleged cartel scheme

Current and former high-ranking Mexican government and law enforcement officials were charged Wednesday in New York with allegedly conspiring with the Sinaloa cartel to distribute “massive” quantities of illicit drugs inside the United States in exchange for bribe payments and political support.

ABC News

Among the defendants is the current governor of Sinaloa, Ruben Rocha Moya.  Neither he nor his codefendants are in U.S. custody.

Moya released a statement on Wednesday, saying, "I categorically and unequivocally reject the allegations brought against me by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, as they are entirely unfounded and lack any basis in truth."

US is engaged in formal 'armed conflict' with 'terrorist' drug cartels, Trump says

"We will prove the baselessness of this slander," Moya added, calling the indictment a "perverse strategy aimed at undermining the constitutional order."

He and nine others are accused of playing central roles in a violent and corrupt drug trafficking conspiracy that federal prosecutors said brought fentanyl, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine from Mexico into the United States, including shielding cartel leaders from investigation, passing sensitive military information to cartel leaders and providing protection for traffickers.

In exchange, the defendants have collectively received millions of dollars in drug money from the faction of the cartel run by the Chapitos, the sons of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, according to the indictment.

The indictment said another defendant, Juan Valenzuela Millan, a high-level commander in the Culiacan Municipal Police, received more than $1,600 every month from the Chapitos in exchange for using the Culiacan Municipal Police to carry out arrests, kidnappings and murders.

In October 2023, Millan allegedly helped the Chapitos kidnap a DEA confidential source and the source’s relative, who was then tortured and killed.

“The Sinaloa Cartel is a ruthless criminal organization that has flooded this community with dangerous drugs for decades,” said U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton.  “As the indictment lays bare, the Sinaloa Cartel, and other drug trafficking organizations like it, would not operate as freely or successfully without corrupt politicians and law enforcement officials on their payroll.  The support of corrupt foreign officials for deadly trafficking of drugs must end.

Mexican Special Prosecutor for the Investigation of Relevant Matters, Ulises Lara, said during a press conference on Wednesday that Mexico will open its own investigation into the allegations.

Lara said authorities will review the evidence to determine whether it meets legal standards and whether the requests are viable under Mexican law.

Mexican law requires evidence indicating probable commission of a crime before any arrest warrant can be issued, according to Lara.

Lara said that if public officials are involved, a formal process is required to lift legal immunity before proceeding.

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ron Johnson released a statement on Wednesday saying, "Combating corruption and transnational criminal activity is a shared priority for the United States and Mexico. Our countries have pledged to strengthen transparency, enforce anti-corruption laws, and uphold the rule of law."

"While we cannot comment on the individual facts of these indictments, and the legal process will need to play out, one thing is certain: corruption that enables organized crime and harms both our countries will be investigated and prosecuted wherever U.S. jurisdiction applies," Johnson added.

What do Americans think of Trump’s attempted Washington DC makeover?

As PresidentDonald Trumpis attempting to makeover several parts of Washington DC, polling suggests many Americans are uneasy with the scale of his proposed overhaul.

USA TODAY

Here's what a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsospollfound about Americans view some of Trump's major proposals in DC.

More than 2,500 Americans were polled April 24-28 about their views on a range of topics, including the Trump administration tearing down the East Wing of the White House to build a 90,000-square-foot ballroom.

The poll found 56% of people do not support the project, whichTrumphas framed as necessary after last weekend's shooting at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondent's Dinner.

"This event would never have happened with the militarily top secret ballroom currently under construction at the White House," Trump said in anApril 26 post on Truth Social.

The ballroom has faced legal issues, including an activelawsuitby the National Trust for Historic Preservation, but construction remains ongoing.

<p style=President Donald Trump released a new rendering of the East Wing on Truth Social Feb. 3, 2026. Trump said the price of his new White House ballroom has risen again to $400 million − double the initial estimate.

Trump’s earlier estimates for the ballroom began at $200 million when it was announced in July, rose to $250 million in September and then to $300 million in October. The ballroom will be financed by private donations, Trump said.

Polling shows Americans are similarly opposed to that plan, with 52% against the project, including 41% who strongly oppose it.

The poll found only 21% of people support the plan to build the towering arch.

White Houseofficials have defended the proposal, saying it would become "one of the most iconic landmarks not only in Washington DC, but throughout the world."

The arch, like the ballroom, is facing a legal battle, as a group of local residents are attempting to block its construction, arguing its construction would could irreversible harm to the area's protected historic landscape.

Trump is also making his presence known in other parts of the city, including the proposed renovations to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where he now serves as chairman of the board.

He is currently moving to overhaul theLincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, resurfacing it to an "American flag blue" coating. The move is part of a broader effort to upgrade the city's historical monuments ahead of the semiquincentennial celebrations.

Musicians perform for customers at the pump, amid high gas prices

When customers pull up tothe pumpsat Quincy Gas station in Quincy, Massachusetts, they're getting more than just fuel for their vehicles.

Good Morning America

Some of them are now also getting a taste of a classical concert, too.

Harvey Kertzman, the owner of Quincy Gas, is a music lover and former choir singer who said he's had the idea to bring classical music and specifically, violists, to his business for years.

"I used to sing in a choir and I went to Europe and did a bunch of concerts and I became enamored with the sound of a viola," Kertzman told ABC News. "About 25 years ago, I figured I would try a guitarist at the gas station to serenade the customers with a guitar."

After his local guitarist stopped playing due to arthritis, Kertzman decided to look for trained violists next and finally found four to play this spring.

Joanne Harding - PHOTO: A rotation of violists are performing live music for customers at Quincy Gas station in Quincy, Massachusetts.

"We're doing a rotation and the customers are really happy to get a little culture in their life when they come to get gas," said Kertzman, adding, "their music is so warming, you can't help but leave with a smile."

Harvey Kertzman - PHOTO: Emily Tardiss is one of the violists playing at Quincy Gas station in Quincy, Massachusetts.

It's a pick-me-up that's come right as gas prices have been surging amid the ongoing war in Iran, which has driven up the price of fuel. The average price of a gallon of gas is about $4.30 as of Thursday, the highest it's been in four years, according toAAAdata. Gas prices have climbed $1.32, or about 44% overall, since the war began on Feb. 28.

Kertzman said he didn't pay for violists to attract customers but simply wanted to share his love of music.

"The gas prices are so high now. Less and less people are driving on the road so our customer base is off by about 20%," Kertzman said. "The higher the gas price goes, the less customers you get."

Caroline Leguia of Milton, Massachusetts, is currently one of the four violists playing once a week, for two hours each, at Quincy Gas. The 35-year-old told ABC News she loves to give the gift of music to her community.

"Playing for the people is just the most special thing because most people who are coming to get gas are not expecting to have live music and to have it be one-on-one, like, that is so special to be playing just to that one person," Leguia said.

Leguia said Quincy Gas might not be a traditional music hall but it's a surprisingly fitting place to play.

"It's not by any means, the most conventionally prestigious venue, but the acoustics are actually incredible because there's this metal roof over the pumps that sort of bounces the sound waves back down," the freelance musician said.

Leguia, who plays a viola made of carbon fiber, can play in sunny, clear and rainy conditions and said she hopes to play everything, from classical songs and jazz standards to pop tunes, until it's too cold to be outside.

"I've watched it change people's day in real time, which is amazing. And people seem genuinely moved by it, delighted by it, surprised and touched. So it's really lovely," said Leguia.
